Katakolo Port
Katakolo Port:
Katakolo is a seaside fishing village and is considered the port of Pyrgos.
Τhe port of katakolo was built in the late 19th century in order to function as a transit station for the export of raisins to Europe. Today it functions less as a commercial port and more as a tourist port, as it is an attraction for cruise ships and pleasure boats. The lighthouse of the port, built around 1865, has been designated since 2001 as a historical monument.
Nearby is the capital of the Prefecture of Ilia, Pyrgos, followed by Ancient Olympia, with the world-famous sanctuary of Zeus and the Stadium where the Olympic Games took place in antiquity. In the wider area of Katakolo there are many picturesque beaches such as Saint Andreas beach for swimming and recreation.
